BGA and Fine-Pitch Assembly: Process Controls That Matter

Fine-pitch assembly quality is influenced by pad geometry, stencil design, paste transfer, component handling, placement accuracy, thermal balance, and inspection access.

Before placement

Check land patterns, solder-mask definition, via placement, stencil thickness, aperture reductions, component moisture sensitivity, coplanarity, and storage conditions. Package and board preparation should match the approved process.

Reflow and hidden joints

Develop the reflow profile around board mass, component limits, solder paste, and oven capability. For BGA and QFN packages, X-ray criteria should define what constitutes acceptable alignment, bridging, opens, and voiding.

Production feedback

Record first-article results, defect location, rework, profile changes, and inspection findings. The goal is not only to repair a sample but to prevent the same condition in repeat production.
