A successful prototype proves that a design can work, but repeat production requires the process to be controlled. The transition should capture what was learned before quantities increase.
Lock the approved data
Confirm the PCB revision, Gerber, BOM, approved substitutions, assembly drawings, programming files, test procedure, labels, enclosure drawings, and packaging requirements. Every production file should identify its revision and release owner.
Capture the manufacturing route
Record panelization, stencil revision, printer settings, placement programs, feeder setup, reflow profile, wave-solder parameters, manual operations, inspection checkpoints, rework instructions, fixtures, and pass/fail limits. First-article findings should be resolved or formally accepted.
Control changes and supply risk
Longer production runs expose component lifecycle, moisture sensitivity, alternate sourcing, process drift, and fixture wear. Define how substitutions are approved, how deviations are recorded, and what evidence accompanies each lot.
Scaling becomes safer when the repeat build is treated as a controlled system rather than a larger copy of the prototype order.
